The Story Behind Smada Reef

Welcome to Smada Reef! I’m a 26-year-old graduate of Florida State College of Jacksonville, and I’ve had a lifelong obsession with two things: fish tanks and 3D printing.

What started as a simple fascination with colorful marine fish eventually evolved into a full-blown passion for reef aquariums. As I began adding corals to my tank, I quickly realized my entry-level lighting just wasn't cutting it for optimal growth. I upgraded to an AI Prime and absolutely loved the power and adjustability, but it came with a couple of frustrating drawbacks. I couldn't stand the harsh "disco ball" effect it cast across my sand bed, and the intensely bright LEDs were blinding me every time I tried to relax on my couch.

I knew there had to be a better way, so I put my 3D printers to work and designed my very first custom light diffuser and shade. It completely transformed my viewing experience.

That first successful design sparked an idea. I realized I could use my background in 3D design and reef-safe materials to solve other common problems in the hobby. I started crafting more accessories for my own tank, expanding my lineup to include custom frag racks, magnetic frag rocks, and specialized diffusers and shades for other popular light fixtures.

After receiving great feedback and successfully selling my gear through eBay, local fish stores, and community reefing groups, I decided it was time to take the next big step. I launched this website to build Smada Reef into a brand of my own, share my custom solutions directly with fellow hobbyists, and see where this incredible journey takes me.
