Frequently Asked Questions
Installation & Light Settings
Q: Which way should the diffuser sheet face when installed? A: For optimal performance, install the sheet with the rough side facing the water and the smooth side facing the light.
Q: Should I increase my light intensity to compensate for the diffuser? A: Yes, we recommend a slight increase of 10% to 15%. Avoid exceeding this range; giving your corals too much light (over PAR) is far more damaging to their health than slightly under-lighting them.
Design, Heat, & Light Bleed
Q: Will the diffuser cause heat to build up on my LED light? A: Not at all. Smada Reef diffusers are engineered and rigorously tested for maximum airflow. Built-in rear vents and an opening in the diffuser sheet itself ensure that air flows freely in and out, keeping your light cool.
Q: Will a Smada Reef diffuser block light bleed into my living room? A: It depends on how you use it:
-
Maximum Light Blocking: Use the frame alone as a shroud (without the diffuser sheet). This completely blocks out the glare, making the frame a worthwhile investment all on its own.
-
With the Diffuser Sheet: It will soften the glare and reduce some light bleed, though not completely.
Benefits & Shimmer ("Disco Ball" Effect)
Q: Do I really need a diffuser? A: While it comes down to personal preference, a diffuser is excellent for blending multi-channel LEDs and eliminating the "disco ball" effect.
Many Smada Reef customers report noticeable improvements in coral health and growth. Diffused light stabilizes the underwater dynamic spectrum, softens harsh shadows, and provides a wider light spread. While historically a newer concept, diffused LED lighting is now being widely adopted by major brands across the industry.
Q: What exactly is the "disco ball" effect? A: It’s the unnatural, erratic shimmer that happens when surface water agitation bends the individual color channels of a puck-style LED. This agitation can magnify separate colors, creating distracting visual patterns and intense local "hot spots."
Q: Will a Smada Reef diffuser completely eliminate my tank's shimmer? A: This depends entirely on your specific tank and lighting layout:
-
Single Light Setup: If you are running a single point-source light (like a lone AquaIllumination Prime over an 18"x18" area), you will still have some shimmer because the light source is narrow. However, the shimmer will look much softer, tamer, and more natural.
-
Multiple Light Setup: If you blanket your tank with multiple fixtures (such as two Hydra 64HDs over a 36" tank), the overlapping light sources will drastically reduce and nearly eliminate the shimmer entirely. As we like to say: you can never have too many lights!
